Scientific Development Squadron (VXS) 1 conducts airborne scientific experimentation and advanced technology development in worldwide operations supporting U.S. Navy and national science and technology (S&T) priorities and war fighting goals. Supporting broadly based, multidisciplinary programs across the full spectrum of scientific research and applied technologies, our focus is toward the maritime application of new and improved airborne data collection techniques, experimental equipment, and system demonstration. While directly supporting scientific programs across the globe, we ensure that our work environment provides for the learning, personal growth, and respect of all our men and women and their families. The current primary mission of VX-1 is to conduct tests, evaluations, and investigations of antisubmarine warfare aircraft weapons systems, airborne strategic weapons system, support systems, equipment, and materials in an operational environment. The squadron also develops, reviews, and disseminates new ASW tactics and procedures for fleet use, serving as the model manager for all Air ASW tactical publications. Because of the squadron's unique position as an inter facing unit between the development of new weapon systems and their subsequent introduction into the fleet, VX-1 is considered the squadron that "does it first."

This is their 'bullet' patch that says "TEST IN PROGRESS" and DOES come with velcro attached.

The 'Evaluators' of VX-4 was established in September '52, and is the Navy's operational test and evaluation squadron located at NAS Point Mugu, CA. They fly a variety of aircraft, but mainly the F-14 and F/A-18. They have quite a history, so for other info, drop me a line and I'll see what else I can find out. VX-4 used to fly F-14's, F-4's and F-18's out of Pt. Mugu until mid 90's when VX-5 formed at China Lake. Both disbanded and reformed as VX-9 at China Lake but a Pt.Mugu det still exists of VX-9 and they have the same Bunny patch. The playboy bunny patch with VX-4 or even VX-9 patch will become quite the commodity soon. As of 01OCT04 VX-9 DET in Point Mugu CA was disestablished. This is the "small" (3-inch) version of their squadron patch and does not have velcro already attached.

Guided Missile Unit (GMU)-7 squadron patch. Very unique patch and does not come with velcro attached.

Guided Missile Unit (GMU)-41 was a joint Navy/Marine outfit of (approx) 50 guys administratively attached to VX-4 at Point Mugu. It evaluated the Bullpup missile and moved on to the Sparrow III in late 1950's. Lots of classified testing back then, as the Canadians were "pushing us" in competition. Very unique patch and does not come with velcro attached.

Air Development Squadron FIVE (VX-5), was commissioned on 18 June 1951 at NAS Moffett Field, CA, under the operational control of Commander, Operational Development Force, now Commander Operational Test and Evaluation Force (COMOPTEVFOR), was assigned to develop and evaluate aircraft tactics and techniques for delivery of airborne special weapons. In July 1956, VX-5 moved to the Naval Air Facility, China Lake, CA, because of the availability of vastly improved ranges and instrumentation facilities. In January of 1985, the VX-5 Detachment at Whidbey Island, which oversaw developments relating to the EA-6B weapon system. In June 1993, the CNO directed the consolidation of VX-4 and VX-5 into a single operational test and evaluation squadron designated as VX-9, with a permanent F-14 Detachment located at Point Mugu, CA. This initiative was launched as part of the "right-sizing" of our Naval Forces in the aftermath of the Cold War.
