The USS Forrestal was the first of the supercarriers, larger than wartime vessels and her design has been the basis for all subsequent carriers (with the angled deck). She entered service in the Fleet in 1956, participating in Mediterranean conflicts on her maiden cruise in 1958. The infamous “Forrest Fire” occurred on the following deployment, killing 134 seaman and wounding 64. After repairs, she served for many more years until finally becoming the most recent training carrier.
