The “Flying Checkmates” of VF-211 fly the F-14A Tomcat from NAS Oceana, VA. They trace their roots to VB-74, established in May 1945, but acquired their current designation in March 1959. This is the “GRAY” bordered version of their squadron patch. They were TARPS capable and were based on the West-Coast ships. They were attached to CVW-9 aboard the USS Stennis (CVN-74).
