(From the Sqdn Supplier) The Battle ‘E’ Award (known as the Battle Efficiency Award, commonly known as the Battle “E”), is awarded annually to a small number of USN ships, submarines, aviation, and other units that win their battle effectiveness competition. The criterion for the Battle Effectiveness Award is the overall readiness of the command to carry out its assigned wartime tasks, and is based on a one-year-long evaluation. The competition for the award is, and has always been, extremely competitive, and in order to be awarded this coveted prize, a unit must demonstrate the highest state of battle readiness. In 2010, VFA-14 ‘TOPHATTERS’ were awarded this title and this is the (small version of that) patch to commemorate that distinction. This SHIELD patch does not have velcro attached.
